Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Journalists?

By Bernardo Sabisky

AI makes it possible to analyze millions of data points, identify patterns, and accelerate journalistic investigations across Latin America. However, an analysis of ten case studies shows that technology does not replace fact-checking, interviews, or editorial judgment. One major obstacle remains: access to public information.

Artificial intelligence is already changing how newsrooms across Latin America conduct investigations. Its ability to examine millions of satellite images, cross-reference court records, and detect potential irregularities in public procurement opens up new possibilities for data journalism.

The question, however, goes beyond technology: what really changes when an investigation incorporates artificial intelligence? An analysis of ten experiences integrating these tools identifies four key lessons and one challenge that algorithms alone cannot solve.
1. Not All Automation Carries the Same Risks

AI can detect anomalies, rank contracts according to their risk levels, classify large volumes of documents, or automate chart creation. Although these tasks can all save time, they are not equivalent.

Each requires a level of human oversight appropriate to its potential consequences. Rather than reducing the debate to whether artificial intelligence will replace journalists, it is more useful to examine which tasks the system performs and which decisions remain under professional control.

Automating a technical process does not mean handing over responsibility for an investigation.
2. Analyzing More Data Does Not Guarantee Better Journalism

Processing large volumes of information is one of the main advantages of artificial intelligence. Interpreting that information correctly is another matter.

A statistical correlation does not, by itself, prove that an irregularity exists. Nor does a figure explain the causes of a problem. To turn an algorithmic finding into a news story, journalists must cross-check evidence, interview sources, conduct fieldwork, and reconstruct the broader context.

Technology can point to a lead. Determining whether that lead has journalistic value requires investigation and verification.
3. Editorial Decisions Remain Human

In the ten cases examined, journalistic teams retained editorial control: they decided what to investigate, how much weight to give each finding, and what information to publish.

AI served as a tool to speed up intermediate stages of technical data processing without replacing professional judgment.

This distinction is fundamental. The speed at which a result is obtained does not determine its public relevance or guarantee its accuracy. Responsibility for published information remains with the journalists and editors who investigate, verify, and shape the story.
4. The Main Obstacle May Have Little to Do With Technology

Even the most advanced tools face limitations when public information is unavailable or difficult to use.

In the projects analyzed, one of the main challenges was gaining access to open, structured data. Closed formats, missing information, and lengthy extraction and cleaning processes can stall an investigation before the analysis even begins.

The challenge, then, is also institutional: without accessible public information, the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence remain limited.
What AI Can Do—and What Journalism Still Requires

In the cases studied, artificial intelligence was used to collect, organize, and analyze data. It was not used to interview sources or craft the final narrative of the stories.

That distinction matters. Journalism is not simply about finding patterns; it also involves asking relevant questions, establishing the facts, and explaining why a finding deserves public attention.

AI can expand newsrooms’ capacity to examine information. But making the most of that potential requires more than adopting new tools: it demands human oversight, access to public data, and professional rigor.

The future of data journalism is not simply about processing more information. It is about turning that information into verified knowledge that serves the public.

Bernardo Sabisky

Bernardo Sabisky
